Wrapped Bitcoin

WBTC was launched back in January 2019, it provides liquidity and interoperability between Bitcoin and Ethereum, making it easier for users to enjoy all of the benefits represented by both networks. Wrapped Bitcoin was developed by a group of different entities, including BitGo, and Kyber Network. The project's main goal has been to bridge the gap between Bitcoin's Blockchain and Ethereum's Blockchain, as many Bitcoin hodlers have had a wish to access the 'new' and growing DeFi ecosystem that was happening on Ethereum without having to sell their beloved BTC. The launch of WBTC marked a significant and also very important milestone/event in blockchain history, It was the very first project to create a true and fully-backed, tokenized version of Bitcoin on Ethereum, and as time passed the project also gained a lot of popularity and recognition among entities, users and developers. In just a few months after the project launched, WBTC’s total supply reached an impressive $1 billion marketcap, this is clearly evidence of acceptance and demonstrates a strong demand within the community.

Wrapped Bitcoin is issued through a centralized custodial, where each of the WBTC is backed by a corresponding Bitcoin that is held in the custodian's reserve. The process of 'wrapping' and 'unwrapping Bitcoin involves something called 'minting' which in essence is the custodian issuing WBTC to your Ethereum wallet when Bitcoin is deposited, likewise when you want to convert the WBTC to Bitcoin (unwrapping) you participate in an event called burn which removes the WBTC from the circulating supply and then the Bitcoin is withdrawn. This flow makes sure that the total supply of WBTC is always equal to the amount of BTC held in the reserve. WBTC does not have a traditional consensus mechanism like Bitcoin or Ethereum, it benefits from Ethereum’s security and scalability.

Wrapped Bitcoin offers several notable features:

• Custodial Risks: As WBTC relies on a centralized custodian to hold the Bitcoin reserves, any vulnerabilities, malicious intent, incompetent management, or other failures on their part can pose a significant risk.
• Regulation: The rise of tokenized assets has attracted regulatory attention, which may affect the future of projects like WBTC.
• Market Volatility: Like all cryptocurrencies, WBTC can experience price fluctuations influenced by market sentiment.
• Dependency on Ethereum: WBTC’s functionality is tied to the Ethereum network, and any issues with Ethereum can impact WBTC.
• Competition: With the growing number of tokenized assets, WBTC faces competition from other Bitcoin-backed tokens and DeFi solutions.
